Today, we’re taking a close look at the new Sebo Balance A1 cordless vacuum cleaner. This is the first of two videos we’ll be doing on this new machine, and now that we’ve managed to get our hands on one to test, it’s time to see how it performs.
People are keen to know what this vacuum is like on the floor and what its closest competitor might be. Based on its size, weight, and intended use, the most comparable model in Dyson’s range is likely the V7 or V8. The Balance A1 isn’t designed as a heavy-duty machine, nor is it intended to replace a mains-powered vacuum. Instead, it’s more of a quick-grab option for jobs like tidying up hard floors, cleaning up small messes, or tackling cobwebs, essentially the same tasks a Dyson cordless is often used for.
Comparing the Sebo Balance A1 to the Dyson V7 and V11
For this test, we’ve got the Dyson V7, which is quite similar to the V8 in both design and price, as well as the Dyson V11, which is a more powerful and expensive machine. The V11 is marketed more as a main vacuum, so we expect it to outperform the Balance A1, but the real question is how the Sebo compares to the V7.
Testing the Performance
We’ve spread some Sebo Duo powder on the floor to see how well each vacuum picks it up. One feature that sets the Balance A1 apart is its simple on/off trigger. Unlike Dyson’s models, which require you to hold the trigger down while in use, the Sebo turns on with one press and off with another. This is a feature that older users, particularly those with arthritis or reduced hand strength, may appreciate.
The Sebo Balance A1 is very lightweight, and its cleaning head is relatively small compared to the larger Dyson heads. In fact, it’s more reminiscent of older Dyson models like the DC34 or the V6. One thing to note is that, much like the Dyson V11, the Sebo starts on medium power by default. To use full power, you need to press a button a couple of times.
Cleaning Results
After running the test, we took a closer look at the results. The Sebo did a decent job of picking up the powder, though a few small bits remained. The Dyson V7 performed similarly but seemed to groom the carpet slightly better, likely due to its different brush roll design. The Dyson V11, as expected, performed the best overall, but it’s a more powerful and expensive vacuum.
It’s fair to say that the Balance A1 works reasonably well on carpet, though it doesn’t match the deeper cleaning power of the V11 or even the V15. It’s more in line with the V7 or V8, making it suitable for light-duty cleaning rather than a full-home vacuum.
Where Does the Sebo Balance A1 Fit In?
Dyson often markets its cordless vacuums as whole-home cleaning solutions, but in reality, most people use them as secondary vacuums alongside a larger, mains-powered machine. Sebo acknowledges this with the Balance A1, positioning it as a supplementary vacuum rather than a primary one.
This machine is alright for quick cleanups, ideal for a last-minute tidy-up before guests arrive or for a fast sweep around the kitchen. It’s also well-suited to older users who might struggle with the weight of other cordless vacuums. While Dyson’s cordless models aren’t exactly heavy, they are noticeably heavier than this Sebo, making the Balance A1 a good option for those seeking a genuinely lightweight vacuum.
Of course, a lightweight design means you won’t get the same deep-cleaning power as a heavier machine. That’s the trade-off, you can either have power and weight or lightness and convenience. The Balance A1 falls into the latter category.
Pricing and Competition
The recommended retail price for the Balance A1 is expected to start around £300. That puts it in the same price range as the Dyson V8, which is still available to buy. It remains to be seen what discounts or price variations retailers will offer, but price comparisons with Dyson will certainly play a big role in customer decisions.
Final Thoughts
The Sebo Balance A1 is not designed for deep carpet cleaning or for homes with heavy-duty vacuuming needs, such as pet owners dealing with large amounts of fur. Instead, it’s a great choice for quick, everyday cleaning and for those who need a very lightweight vacuum.
The two standout features of this vacuum are its weight, which is much lighter than many Dyson cordless models, and its simple trigger mechanism, which eliminates the need to keep holding it down during use. These features will likely appeal to older users in particular.
