The Sebo X Series: A Comparison of Three Generations

By | September 4, 2024

Today, we will look at navy blue Sebo vacuum cleaners, focusing on the Sebo X Series. Specifically, we’ll discuss the Sebo X1, the Sebo X4, and the latest Sebo X7. We’ll explore the evolution of the X Series and then conduct a floor test with them side by side so you can see the differences and decide which one performs best.

You can watch the video we did below on this:

The article below is a synopsis of what is in the video above.

Sebo X1 (1999)

Let’s start with the Sebo X1 from 1999. This particular model has been rebuilt, and it’s quite rare to find one of these in navy blue nowadays. The X1 holds a special place in the hearts of many vacuum enthusiasts.

Sebo X4 (2008)

Next, we have the Sebo X4 Extra (same as the X4 Excel), which was one of the most popular models in the Sebo range. Unfortunately, the X4 was discontinued due to EU regulations, as it was considered too loud and too powerful. However, you can still purchase a new one from us, as we rebuild these models. The X4 remains one of the most loved Sebo models ever produced.

Sebo X7 (Current Model)

Finally, we come to the current model, the Sebo X7 Extra. This is the third generation of the Sebo X Series. If you’re looking to buy a navy blue Sebo vacuum today, this is the model you’ll likely find. And of course, you’ll find them at the best prices on our website, seoshop.co.uk.

The EU Regulations and Motor Changes

There’s been some speculation about the performance of the newer models. When the EU forced the discontinuation of the X4 and the introduction of the X7, they also mandated a reduction in motor power, from 1100 or 1300 watts (depending on the year) down to 900 watts. Some people think that the new model isn’t as good as the old one, but here’s a little secret: the X1 also had a motor of around 900 watts (actually 850 watts), and it’s still highly regarded. So, it’s not just about wattage—it’s about machine design and effectiveness.

Floor Test Comparison

To put this to the test, we’ll apply some Sebo Duo powder on the floor and run all three models side by side. Let’s see how they perform, and you can make up your own mind.

Test Results:

After giving each vacuum a minimal number of passes, it’s clear that the differences in performance are quite negligible. For me, the X7 had a slight edge, which is reasonable given that it’s the newest model. However, even the 25-year-old X1 did an impressive job.

Durability and Evolution

One of the standout features of the Sebo X Series is its durability. These machines can be repaired indefinitely, thanks to excellent parts availability. If you have an old model, it’s definitely worth repairing. The X Series is an evolved machine. Sebo has continuously improved these vacuums over the years. Unlike some other brands that constantly overhaul their designs and then spend years fixing flaws, Sebo makes incremental improvements with each new model. This has resulted in the X7 benefiting from 30-plus years of evolution, making it a refined and reliable choice. This is something we discussed with the UK MD of Sebo, Justin Binks when we interviewed him.

Recycling Programme

If you have an old Sebo that’s finally reached the end of its life (and everything dies eventually), you might be wondering if the new model will perform as well. Based on our tests, you don’t have much to worry about. And if you like the idea of recycling, we offer a programme where you can send your old Sebo back to us—dead or alive. We’ll pay to have it brought back, dismantle it, and use the salvaged parts to keep other machines running. It’s a green solution that helps reduce waste. Find out about that >>here<<.
